The city of Maastricht and its surrounding region hide a treasure trove of heritage, from marl caves and defensive structures to industrial heritage sites and unique natural areas. The Bonsdalgroeve and the former NATO headquarters are two examples. Both locations have an impressive history but were closed to the public for many years. How do you responsibly open such vulnerable, historical sites? This is a challenge that Explore Maastricht gladly takes on.
Making underground-stories accessible
Explore Maastricht and Het Limburgs Landschap join forces to preserve and share Limburg's heritage. Whereas Het Limburgs Landschap - owner of both the NATO headquarters and the Bonsdal quarry - ensures the protection and management of nature and monuments, Explore Maastricht ensures that stories come to life again for residents and visitors. Henriette Frederiks, Explore Maastricht: "The cooperation with Het Limburgs Landschap ensures that these, for the city, important heritage sites are further developed and preserved for the future. We make the sites safely and responsibly accessible, with conservation being more important than commerce. We also take care of story development, because we know better than anyone how to tell a story in a catchy way. We then train guides who take visitors into the history, geology and atmosphere of the site. Together, we make the underground stories of Limburg accessible."

Thanks to the cooperation, two hidden heritage sites have been made (more) visible again and visitors have the opportunity not only to see the sites, but to really experience them. The partnership goes beyond exploitation. Namely, a partnership that connects heritage with the city, its residents and visitors. Together, we continue to explore how these places can develop further. With respect for their past and with an eye to the future.
